To my understanding, organisms evolve in order to adapt to their environment and its pressures. If that is the case, how come we are conscious? It seems like consciousness is an unnecessary add-on. Or is it possible that consciousness is an illusion?

rossssssh it's yo girl jp,
I think it's pretttty obvious from the accomplishments and adaptations of humans that consciousness is definitely an evolutionary advantage. maybe it's fucked the world a little, but we definitely have a huge advantage over pretty much every other living creature. it's like the ultimate adaptation
legit answer. i was hella bored and was lurking all these "philosophy" websites and wanted to see what ppl had to say to this one.
very nice.
i feel we are conscious because that allows us to enjoy and make decisions in life. but at the same time humans are too smart for their own good and our consciousness is fuckin us up because we are questioning things that might have been better unanswered.
mmmm i would disagree with that natalie, what else are our senses for but to make sense of the world? Finding answers to questions is what's lead us this far, we might not ever find the answers but the answers we find along the way seem to be leading us in a very progressive (and simultaneously destructive in other ways) direction
yea i agree with that. my comment was kinda vague because i cant explain it exactly the way im thinking it. but questioning things have lead to scientific breakthroughs and things that have made the world better but have also made humans superior and gave a lot of power to which some people take for granted and use it for selfish and malicious ways.
this convo can go on forever :)
ya i feel it, that's why i added the simultaneously destructive part at the end of mah last comment
